Research Podium and Poster Winners Recognized

By Midge Bowers

The 2020 GAPNA Annual Conference was a virtual success! Although we were unable to share a ride in the Research Cash Cab, there was clear evidence of active research among GAPNA members in the multiple poster sessions.

The Research Committee supports you in your efforts as you consider a submission for next year's conference. Please reach out through the GAPNA Exchange to consult with a Research Committee member as you prepare an abstract for submission.

Spotlight on Research

Valerie Gruss, PhD, APN, CNP-BC, FAAN, is a GNP with an extensive history in geriatric research. As primary investigator of two HRSA Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program grants (2019-2024 and 2015-2018), she created nine innovative sustainable geriatric programs ( ENGAGEIL ).

Here are just two examples of Dr. Gruss' innovative work. As a GNP, she identified the vital need for geriatric training and created the online accredited Learning in Interprofessional Geriatrics (OALIG)TM program. OALIG contains a library of 27 geriatric topic education modules (30 minutes each) available for free. Since 2017, over 18,258 online modules have been completed by over 5,000 learners across the United States.

Using mobile technology to educate patients and communities about Alzheimer's disease, she created the Dementia Guide Expert free mobile app for iOS and Android. Launched in 2017, the app has been downloaded/viewed over 56,000 times in 12 countries. In 2018, it was translated into Spanish and in 2019 into Korean. Dr. Gruss is creating an accessible version for people with disabilities.

We are looking forward to the 2021 Annual Conference September 30-October 2, 2021 in San Diego, CA!
