Chapter Excellence: Northern California Chapter
GAPNA’s oldest chapter, the Northern California Chapter, sets the standard in leadership, innovation, and community impact. They host an annual CEU conference, offer student scholarships, and provide community education. Nationally, they’ve influenced initiatives like the GS-C credential and led pre-conference workshops, while locally mentoring new members and fostering an inclusive community. Their outreach includes dementia education for first responders, mobile clinics for unhoused older adults, and health services for underserved communities. They also advocate for expanded APRN practice and contribute to research on elder care, hospice, and wound care.
Excellence in Clinical Practice: James Sims, DNP, APRN, ANP-BC, NP-C, CENP
James Sims exemplifies clinical excellence in geriatric care. Over a 35-year career, he has advanced from CNA to Primary Care Division Chief, currently managing care for 1,100 older adults. He has improved chronic disease management, reduced polypharmacy, and implemented early frailty detection. A mentor and advocate for culturally responsive care, James partners with interdisciplinary teams and community agencies to enhance outcomes.
Excellence in Community Service: Kimberly Posey, AGPCNP-BC, DNP, RN, GS-C
Kimberly Posey is recognized for her dedication to underserved and unhoused older adults. She founded a Foot Care Clinic in Fort Worth, Texas, serving over 700 individuals with trauma-informed care that restores mobility and dignity. She has mentored 50+ APRN students, presented nationally, and helped peers replicate her impactful clinic model.
Excellence in Education: Shantha Franks, DNP, RN, APN, GNP-BC, NP-C
Shantha Franks is honored for advancing gerontological nurse practitioner education. Since 2017, she has developed geriatric-focused coursework for FNP and AGNP programs, using innovative teaching strategies like simulations and community partnerships. She contributes nationally through publications, presentations, and GAPNA’s Education Committee.
Excellence in Leadership: Natalie Baker, DNP, ANP-BC, GNP-BC, CNE, GS-C, FAANP, FAAN
Natalie Baker is recognized for her sustained leadership in gerontological nursing. A GAPNA President and Leadership Institute Director, she has advanced APRN practice, co-authored key position statements, shaped national policy, and improved care in nursing homes. Her advocacy, mentorship, and education efforts have strengthened the profession and care for older adults nationwide.
Excellence in Research: Connie Cole, PhD, DNP, RN, ANP-C, GERO-BC, ACHPRN
Connie Cole is honored for advancing gerontological nursing science. She leads a research program improving palliative care for nursing home residents, bridging evidence and practice. Her work includes developing a palliative care screening tool, publishing 15 peer-reviewed articles, securing external funding, and contributing nationally through GAPNA’s Research Committee.
