Expanding the Scope of Practice of APRNS

Many assert expanding the scope of practice (SOP) for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) in primary care would have cost benefits to patients, public, local business community, and state.

However, very few studies have truly quantified these cost savings in a methodologically rigorous way.

Based on the limited studies reviewed in this study, expanding the SOP for APRNs would help healthcare systems achieve Pareto efficiency by allowing access to high-quality care for more patients without increasing the costs of health care for the public.

For more info, see Fraser & Milillo. (2018). Expanding the scope of practice of APRNs: A systematic review of the cost analyses used. Nursing Economic$, 36(1), 23-28.
